Matti S. Aapro, MD
Matti S. Aapro, MD, is Dean of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Institute at the Clinique de Genolier in Genolier, Switzerland, and Consultant for the Division of Oncology-Hematology and the Department of Surgery for the Hopital Cantonal Universitaire in Geneva, Switzerland. He is also E-Learning Director of the European School of Oncology, Milano, Italy, where he previously served as a member of the Executive Committee and Director of the Editorial Division.
Dr. Aapro is Consultant to the Scientific Director of the European Institute of Oncology in Milano, Italy, formerly serving as Director of the Division of Oncology and Chair for the Department of Medical Oncology and Radiation Therapy.
Dr. Aapro received his medical degree from the Faculte de Medicine, University de Geneve, in Switzerland and trained at the University Hospital of Geneva. He subsequently completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson.
An active researcher and frequent international lecturer, Dr. Aapro's clinical interests include new drug development, breast cancer, cancer in the elderly, and supportive care. He has authored or coauthored numerous articles on various aspects of cancer treatment. Also active in several editorial capacities, Dr. Aapro is Editor-in-Chief for Critical Reviews in Oncology and Hematology, Associate Editor for Annals of Oncology, and Co-Section Editor for Geriatric Oncology for The Oncologist. He is a member of the editorial board for the European Journal of Cancer, Supportive Care in Cancer, and Oncology. He is also a manuscript reviewer for a number of journals, including the British Journal of Cancer, Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology, Drugs, Lancet, and the Journal of Supportive Care. Dr. Aapro is Editor-in-Chief for www.cancerworld.org and was formerly Editor-in-Chief for Oncoweb.
Dr. Aapro is also an active member of several professional organizations. He is President of the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), Executive Director of the International Society for Geriatric Oncology, and Chair of the Cancer in the Elderly Task Force of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). Dr. Aapro served as Executive Congress Organizer for the European Society for Medical Oncology; as a member of the Melanoma Cooperative Group and the Early Clinical Screening Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer; as a member of the Executive Committee (Treasurer) of the Swiss Society for Medical Oncology; and as Executive Director for the Swiss Oncology Society.
He is a member of the International Society for Gynecologic Oncology, the European Association for Cancer Research, the European Society for Medical Oncology, the Swiss Society for Palliative Medicine, the Swiss Society for Medical Oncology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the American Association for Cancer Research.
