Report to the Nation on Prostate Cancer 2004
Chapter 7. Management of Side Effects of Prostate Cancer Therapy by David F. Penson, MD, MPH, and Mitchell H. Sokoloff, MD

(Please follow the link to access the resource)

Report to the Nation on Prostate Cancer 2004, has been published by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The complete citation to this document can be found in the References section of this website. Chapter 7 is of particular interest, as it focuses on better communication between the practitioner and the patient. This chapter addresses the management of side effects of prostate cancer therapy and includes a discussion of the prevalence of treatment-related side effects (eg, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and treatment-related bone loss) and their effects on overall quality of life. The importance of taking a proactive approach toward incorporating the management of side effects into therapeutic protocols is stressed.

While the entire 94-page report can be accessed at the Prostate Cancer Foundation website, Chapter 7 is available on the Medscape website as a continuing medical education (CME) program. CME credit is offered for urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other healthcare professionals who treat patients with prostate cancer. This chapter can be accessed at http://www.medscape.com/viewprogram/3446_pnt.

Medscape is an online free resource for physicians and health care professionals and features CME programs, medical journal articles and news, and comprehensive drug information. Earning credit for CME programs is required for health care professionals for license renewal and to keep pace with evolving medical knowledge. The site is also accessible to patients. A registration process is required to access the programs. Please note that although expiration dates are common to CME programs, expired programs can still be accessed, and the value of the information remains valid.
